Very rare terracotta head. Probably around 800 years old, if one interprets the concentration on the expertise of the QED laboratory in Marseille. This is a remarkably advanced age for the Ife culture.
The very elongated head has the vertical lines typical of Ife and is very naturalistic in the mouth and nose area. The eyes, which are later shown horizontally in this idealised style, are very stylised and reduced to a slant upwards. The head has been cleared of earth inside and is hollow. |
