Galerie Peter Hermann has been in operation since 1989, concentrating on:
Contemporary art by artists from around the world with a thematic focus on Africa and authentic ancient art from West and Central Africa.
Our meticulously curated exhibitions are well-attended by visitors from all cultural backgrounds and social strata. The participating artists are carefully chosen and coordinated into the program with emphatically diverse positions.
In presenting African content, the gallery works to high art historical standards; it is one of the few galleries in the world that consistently presents African art over a long timeline.
In the early 1990s, a number of established artists were added to the gallery program and introduced to the global public via the ambitious large-scale exhibitions Africa Explores and Les magiciens de la terre. |
 |
The gallery has also always concentrated on supporting talented newcomers. Highlights include participation in the 7. Triennale der Kleinplastik Europa-Afrika and Vielfaches Echo in Stuttgart, self-curated exhibitions in art clubs and consulting activities like the collabroation in 2005 with Chéri Samba at the Braunschweig art club (Kunstverein Braunschweig). Three artists with whom the gallery worked in 2004 participated in the Documenta XI and nine in Africa Remix in Düsseldorf, London, Paris and Tokyo. Artists represented by the gallery have participated in Biennales across the world from Venice to Gwangju, Johannesburg to Dakar.
The reputation built through these high-profile successes allowed the gallery to turn some of its attention to non-African artists whose work is nonetheless thematically related to the African continent. The very successful touring work Stille Post by Angelika Böck – on view in various locations as part of the Die obere Hälfte - Die Büste von Rodin bis Giacometti exhibit – was first shown in the Galerie Peter Herrmann. The gallery was also the only one in Europe to show – in cooperation with the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg – Laura Anderson Barbata’s anthropological pieces. Meanwhile, the Around and Around exhibition concept won the gallery selected work by a number of other western artists like Joseph Kosuth, Martin Kippenberger, Haim Steinbach and Imi Knoebel. Juxtaposition with these established artists was instrumental in the breakthrough of many young artists from Africa. Sales of full collections have been brokered around the world.
Supporting local artistic activities is also an important part of the gallery’s work. From 1989 to 2000 in Stuttgart and today in Berlin, the gallery has organized discussion groups and events and, with its openings, provided an intellectually-minded platform for dialogue. Music, gastrosophy, literature and theatre are embedded in the gallery program, focal points of cooperations like, for example, the Afrika Festival Potsdam and the perennial Africome project, carried out in conjunction with the Federal Agency for Civic Education. In Berlin, cooperations with embassies represent yet further successful development projects.
In addition to selling high-quality painting and sculpture, the gallery also devotes exhibits to film and photographic productions. We organize and curate exhibitions for galleries, businesses and museums, provide expertise to customers and issue expert reports for insurance and customs purposes. As an expert on African art and culture, Peter Herrmann frequently consults on political and economic matters.
In 1995, we became probably the first German gallery to develop a web presence; since then, we’ve been working on numerous technological projects, mostly in the realm of user support and software development. The goal of this pioneering work is to free the gallery from its conventional site-dependence. Storage, exhibition preparation, placement of artists and customer trends are some of the most important areas in which this web-inclusive corporate structure has made itself felt.
Right now, our domain is home to 4,500 pages of images and detailed texts. This corresponds to around 50 catalogues, whose full contents are available free of charge. Our site gets particularly high traffic from educational institutions, which often quote from our texts and biographies; from a loyal group of collectors who appreciate illustrated artist pages; and from a number of international visitors who find us via links from university directories, Africa servers and general search engines. In total, the site gets between 20,000 and 55,000 visitors per month.
The navigation of our webpages is simplified through the Menu Bar which appears at the top of every page.
Following is a description of our seven Menu options:
Home - Brings you back to the main page and is convenient for bookmarking.
Email - This is the place to click if you would like to be included in our mailings, want to send us your comments, questions or critiques, or to place an order.
Around and Around - Our largest exhibition gave this section its name. This is where you'll find comprehensively documented exhibitions with images, descriptions and cross-references.
Traditionelle afrikanische Kunst (Traditional African Art) - This section, divided by region, shows a portion of the Peter Herrmann collection. Explanatory texts (some already in English) are provided for those objects, which are art historically significant and/or controversial.
Aktuell (Current) - On average, this page has the highest viewing rate. It's where you'll find current information about our own as well as outside exhibitions, in addition to activities of the artists represented by the Gallery. Parts of this page are already in English and we plan for this area to be completely bilingual in the near future. It's also where a column appears from time to time, attention is drawn to new webpages, and activity that goes on behind the scenes is brought to the fore. It's where we critique, commend and on occasion complain.
Information - The page where you currently are. Essential facts and information can be found here.
Archiv (Archive) - Alphabetical listing of artists represented by the Gallery as well as artists joining individual exhibitions. The majority of the Represented Artists are presented in detail, each on individual pages - an invaluble resource for both collectors and exhibit organizers.
Tip - Due to the extensive network of pages, there is a possibility that linked pages will open in new windows. If several windows have opened, we recommend closing the already viewed pages.
